For students: thesis topics

Master’s and PhD students join one long-term program, so every thesis adds to the same body of evidence.

Where we are: preparatory year, 2026–27

The LDQ Cohort is preparing for its first survey wave in October 2027. This year we are reviewing the evidence, building and piloting the survey in Arabic and English, seeking ethics approval at HBKU, Hamad Medical Corporation and Primary Health Care Corporation, and setting up four recruitment streams.

Done

  • Master protocol drafted
  • Four recruitment streams designed
  • Three new survey instruments specified

Under way

  • Ethics submissions to HBKU, HMC and PHCC
  • Survey build and translation
  • Pilot with about 100 participants

Thesis topics for the coming year

Year 1 · Topic 1

Scoping review: digital and AI advice-seeking in diabetes

Map what is known about how people with diabetes use search engines, social media and AI chatbots for advice, and how this relates to distress and self-management, with a focus on the Gulf.

Suits: Nursing, pharmacy, public health, health management

Year 1 · Topic 2

Developing and validating three new survey instruments

Develop the Advice-Source Portfolio, the Digital-Advice Action Checklist and the Advice-Conflict Scale: translation into Arabic, cognitive interviews and first reliability tests.

Suits: Nursing, pharmacy, psychology, statistics

Year 1 · Topic 3

Pilot study of the LDQ survey

Run the pilot with about 100 adults with type 2 diabetes: test survey length, recruitment through each stream and data quality, and report what to change before Wave 1.

Suits: Nursing, pharmacy, public health, health informatics

Year 1 · Topic 4

Clinician Delphi: safe guidance on AI use in diabetes

Bring together doctors, nurses, pharmacists and diabetes educators in Qatar to agree what safe use of AI for diabetes advice looks like.

Suits: Medicine, nursing, pharmacy, health management

What comes next

  1. 2027–28Wave 1: baseline profiles by stream and validation of the new instruments.
  2. 2028–29Wave 2: first within-person change.
  3. 2029–30Wave 3: three-year trajectories, health literacy and safety.
  4. 2030–31Wave 4: delayed effects compared across care settings.
  5. 2031–32Wave 5: five-year synthesis and prediction of persistent distress and unsafe actions.

Topics in later years

Each year’s students choose a module from a pre-approved library, such as:

  • Medication beliefs and adherence
  • Trust in advice from AI, pharmacists and doctors
  • When advice conflicts: whom patients follow
  • Sleep and shift work
  • Stigma and social support
  • Diabetes burnout
  • Family and household
  • A brief safe-use information trial
  • Clinicians’ views of digital advice
