Caring for someone with diabetes
How to help without taking over, and how to look after yourself.

Learn the basics together
Go to an appointment or education session together if they agree. Knowing their targets and medicines helps you support them.
Be ready for low blood sugar
Learn the signs and the rule of 15, and know where fast-acting sugar is kept. A hypo card in their wallet helps others help them too.
Support, not policing
- Ask how you can help rather than commenting on what they eat.
- Make healthy choices the family norm, not a special diet.
- Celebrate effort, not just numbers.
Look after yourself
Caring can be tiring. Share the load with others, and talk to someone if you feel overwhelmed.
